When it comes to trying to start a new career, we all tend to get the same advice time and time again: “follow your dreams!” Now, on the surface, this sounds like sound advice. After all, if you follow your dreams, then you’ll be able to find a job that you find satisfying and enjoyable all of the time. But is that actually the case? Well, the reality is that following your dreams can be great, it just requires a huge amount of luck. After all, who’s to say that there are careers available doing what you really want to do, and even if there are, who’s to say that you can do those jobs? Just because you love something doesn’t mean that you’re good at it. It’s actually a far better idea to follow your skills rather than your dreams. Here are just a few reasons why.

It makes getting a job easier

Here’s the thing, if you’ve got a specific passion or dream job in mind, you’re going to have a fairly narrow spectrum of things that you can look for when job hunting. Not only that but you’ve also got to think about whether or not you’re actually qualified for those jobs. However, if you’re following your skills, a whole bunch of other options becomes available to you. If you’re the kind of person with a lot of experience with numbers and skills in calculations, then the latest Your jobs are going to be perfect for you. If you’ve got a gift for talking to people, then many customer services and marketing jobs will open up for you. Any job that uses your skills becomes a position that you can fill, regardless of the industry that you’re in.

It makes performing that job more satisfying

The old saying goes “find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Well, the truth is that that saying is completely wrong. It doesn’t matter how much you love your job; you’re still going to have days where you’re frustrated and exhausted and just want to go home. But if you’re working a job that’s specifically built around your skillset, then you’re going to find that those kinds of days are much more few and far between.

It offers more growth potential

If you already have skills in something, then you’re going to be in a much better position to push yourself forward and grow in your career. Just because you love something, that doesn’t mean that you’re not at risk of getting stuck doing the same thing over and over. If you follow your skills, you’re going to be able to progress much more easily.

This all might sound a little bit cynical and don’t let it make you think that there’s no point in pursuing the kind of career that you’re really passionate about. However, it’s important to remember that there’s a good chance that you’re going to be much more satisfied with your job if it’s something that you have the skills to be able to do well, rather than just being in a field that you really enjoy.
