I am a real health enthusiast and love trying out new activities. As soon as I hear about the next big thing, I’m itching to try it out. Of course, before I try something new, I always make sure to do adequate research. This month, Jiu Jitsu is quickly becoming the power sport of the health and wellness industry. It’s an activity that all the celebs are raving about for it’s many health and wellness benefits.
Unlike yoga, an activity that I am passionate about, Jiu Jitsu, is more defence focused. However, it does incorporate a lot of yoga-based movements, so if you’re a yoga-lover it could be perfect for you. Jiu Jitsu is a form of martial art that’s focused on self defence and mindfulness and is suitable for people of all ages. It’s a fast paced activity, so is a fantastic way to increase your fitness. There are so many reasons to give Jiu Jitsu a try, here are a few of them:
Teaches mind and body Awareness
One of the great things about Jiu Jitsu is that it teaches mind and body awareness. This means that when you’re training with an opponent, you’re very mindful of what movement to make next. You learn to use your body in ways that you didn’t know you could, as well as to think before each move is made. Success in Jiu Jitsu is about thinking about your opponent’s next move, so that you can adequately block it. There’s a lot more to this sport than ‘fighting’ an opponent, it’s very mindfulness focused.
If, like me, you’re someone who loves yoga, you’re sure to enjoy Jiu Jitsu because it incorporates yoga in many ways. Many of the poses used in yoga, such as the plow pose, are used to fight off opponents. Another way yoga is incorporated into Jiu Jitsu is via breathing exercises. In Jiu Jitsu, you’re taught how important it is to relax and breathe when defending yourself.
It’s a fun way to stay fit
The great thing about Jiu Jitsu is that it’s fun. There are so many forms of exercise that are dull and boring, but not this martial art. In each class, you’ll learn new things and develop new skills that you never thought you’d have. Unlike other forms of exercise, fitness is developed through small, quick movements. This makes your fitness levels easier to build up. So even if you’re unfit, this is an activity that you have to try – after a couple of classes your fitness will have vastly improved.
You’ll learn to defend yourself
One of the most important aspects of jiu jitsu for us girls, is the fact that it teaches you to defend yourself. We leave in a world where sadly, there are many attacks on women, which is why learning to defend yourself is so important. The great thing about this form of martial art is that it teaches you to use the strongest points on your body to defend yourself. So no matter your size or strength, you know how to use your body as a weapon.
So there you have it, the top reasons to give Jiu Jitsu a try. If you want to boost your fitness, improve mindfulness and learn to defend yourself, this is definitely an activity you should do.
