Today’s global market is more than ever dependent on technology as the driving force of major finance in the world. This dependency demands from the world’s workforce to comply with corresponding occupations that will push forward new technological advancements, fueling the global economy. In no small part this relies on the education, especially in natural science fields. This is why many parents today are looking to STEM education to improve their children’s chances of competitiveness in the future job hunt. The far-reaching significance of STEM education will not only prove to be important in children’s future, but provides numerous advantages during development as well.

What Is STEM Education?

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. And even though the main area of focus does revolve around those subjects, STEM education encourages students to incorporate that knowledge interdisciplinary across all fields. This allows them to make connections outside those four subjects, and expand and use their knowledge in various contexts. By encouraging children to use what they learn in atypical environments, STEM also motivates children to be independent by thinking outside the box, asking the right questions, and make discoveries on their own.

Innovative STEM approach

What sets STEM education apart from other methods is that it can be adopted from an early age, since it relies on learning through experience. Children receive information conventionally, but are then tasked to pursue it in nature. This means children can easily make the connection with this learning method, since it creates an active working environment encouraging exploration through experience, which is already familiar to children. Adopting STEM during early childhood, will ultimately build strong ties to learning, develops skills and interests, and motivates them to learn.

Incorporating Diverse Learning Methods

Another great feature of STEM education is its ability to incorporate all three learning methods: auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. The passive acquisition of information may only involve one method, but when making the connection kids can use whatever method suits them, and the situation. So, as children learn about addition and subtraction they can either visualize leaves to help them, learn through song, or use actual leaves outside the classroom and perform the functions through touch.

STEM Provides Great Foundations

Because of its familiarity, STEM education can already be incorporated into everyday life of kids, from as soon as their first year. This allows to build a sturdy foundation for later learning. Later, this allows STEM to be applicable into all activities, skills, and interests. STEM also allows the ability to be included into the curriculum of early learning centres. Together with professional guidance this will prove to be useful in higher educational levels within the educational system.

Incorporating the New

It does not stop there, since STEM incorporates innovative approaches to classical studies. What this means is that it uses the advantages of new technological advancements to bring the studied material to the students. Kids can use online note-sharing services like Think Swap to interconnect their findings, ideas and study material. Once kids learn, for example, that they can share their extensive physics notes among each other, they will improve communication, and their teamwork skills. This means that by incorporating new innovations they rely on life skills to master the study material, in the end receiving the best of both worlds.

Asking the Right Questions

Through STEM, children are encouraged to ask the right questions. By doing this, children display a motivated desire to learn about the world around them. Their inborn curiosity is encouraged and they want to understand each new information entirely. Kids brain will build confidence by asking “what” questions, rather than discouraging “why” questions. Instead of asking “why does a stick float in water”, and be discouraged by buoyancy, they will ask “what tree is that stick from” or “what shape is that stick” encouraging children to observe, and investigate their surroundings.

Establishing a Relationship with Nature

STEM education leads children to establish a connection with nature, giving them a positive outlook on their environment, and adding worth to their character. Because getting outside has numerous benefits to children, incorporating learning with nature allows children to make relevant and tangible connections with what they see. Maintaining this relationship with nature throughout childhood, it will continue into the future. This ultimately provides a steady source of inspiration, motivation, and internal determination to learn.

Finally, what makes STEM education great is its ability to prepare kids for life. They will learn the fundamental disciplines important for today’s global market, and become competitive contenders. But what will make them achieve this is their ability to incorporate learning by experience, and most of all establish familiar connections between what they learn, and do with the natural world. With great STEM foundations their educational process will come easy to them, and allow them to reach their full potential, becoming respectable professionals and people.
