New Surgical Methods for Back Pain Chicago

5 min read

Back pain is a very common medical problem suffered by almost every one of us at least once during our lifetime. Back pain may be caused due to injury or trauma or simply be an effect of the natural aging process. The most common cause of chronic back pain is lumbar spinal stenosis. This involves the narrowing of the spinal canal resulting in application of pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots leading to the painful symptoms of the disease. Sufferers of chronic back pain often lose mobility, functionality and stop living a normal lifestyle. They also may enter into depression due to deteriorating work and family life as a result of the painful condition.

Traditional vs New Surgical techniques

Surgical resolution of chronic back ache is often the only option left for the physician. Traditional surgical techniques use an open-back surgery method involving extensive invasive procedures, blood loss, scarring, slower recovery times and higher post operative risks. However, there is good news for the patients suffering from chronic back ache. New age surgical methods minimize the risks associated with surgical treatments of back ache that offer aged patients better options of spine care.

New Surgical Methods for Back Pain

Endoscopic surgery: This is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that relies more on pathology than on age. Here, a small incision is made in the back of the patient and an endoscope is used to gently spread the muscles for access to the spinal canal. Here, there is no need to slice through muscles unlike open back surgeries. Since muscles are spared in such surgeries, they can be performed in an outpatient setting. The reduced risks associated with endoscopic surgery makes it possible to work on healthy, aged patients with minimal post operative risks. Endoscopy is quite useful in treating lumbar spinal stenosis.

IDET (Intradiscal Electrothermal Therapy): Another new surgical method for treating back pain, IDET is also a minimally invasive surgical procedure that can be performed in outpatient settings. It is used to treat back aches causes by tears or herniation’s in the lumbar discs. Here, a hollow needle is inserted into the affected lumbar disc followed by the passage of an electrothermal catheter through the needle. The catheter tip is then heated to 90 degrees Celsius for a few minutes to contract and thicken the collagen fibers of the disc wall, sealing the tears and cracks in the disc. Nerve endings exposed at the tears are burned receding the sensitivity of these nerves.
