Want To Quit Drinking? Here’s How To Do It

6 min read

Enjoying a drink or two is the highlight of the week for many of us. And there may even be the odd weekend when we have one or two more. The Government tells us we should be drinking less frequently and fewer units. But alcohol is often our one guilty pleasure we just don’t want to give up. Unfortunately, there are many reasons to do so. Here, there are some common tips to quit drinking.

We only get one liver, and it is a very fragile organ. It is also essential. We cannot live without a healthy and functioning liver. It is easy to damage with continued alcohol or drugs use. And drinking regularly makes us far more susceptible to other diseases of the liver too. Signs that your liver is suffering include a yellowish tinge to the skin and chronic fatigue.

Alcohol is also addictive. Worse still, we can build up a tolerance. This means we need to drink more to get the same feeling of relaxation from it. Many of us drink to wind down after a long week. Some of us drink to wind down after a long day. If you’ve reached the point where you can’t wind down without it, now is the time to quit.

Start by recognizing just how much alcohol you are consuming. Note it down, because it’s easy to ignore it sometimes. You can find centers for drug and alcohol treatment for women that excel at helping people through the tough times of quitting alcohol. If you feel that need for it, it’s time to get some help from a professional team who know what to do.

Sometimes we just want to stop drinking as part of a detox or cleanse. It’s good to have alternative ways to wind down and relax. Physical activities like running, swimming and Yoga, are very good ways to let off steam, focus, and relax the muscles of the body. Eating a healthy meal slowly with a large glass of water is another way to help you relax. Sit at the table and savor each bite. Your focus on the sensations of taste, chewing, and swallowing can be a great distraction. This helps you relax your mind and body. It will also help you avoid indigestion that is common for people experiencing stress.

Let your friends and family know that you aren’t drinking right now. Describe it as a healthy choice, or just say you’re not in the mood for it. You shouldn’t have to explain yourself. If friends persist in tempting you, it might be time to back away from them for a while. Alcohol-free wines and beers are now freely available at bars and pubs. You can even have virgin cocktails. If you don’t like to be around your friends when they’re altered by alcohol, leave a little earlier in the evening.

Sometimes alcohol becomes too big a part of our lifestyle, and we need help to boot it out. Other times, we just want to have a break or quit the booze to better our health. Surround yourself with supportive friends who will back your decision and help you through it.
